Exploring Our Local Snakes

Spend a summer hiking our mountains, fishing on one of the creeks in the Upper Penns Creek watershed, or even tending your home garden, and you’re likely to encounter at least one of our many native snake species. Reactions range from terror to fascination, but almost everyone benefits from more information and resources. Meet the ambassadors of our local nonvenomous species, learn to identify the most common snakes in our area, and increase your snake awareness in this short workshop designed to demystify our region’s most controversial creatures.
Local naturalist Karl Leitzel has decades of experience identifying and handling many of our local snake species. He will bring one or two local snakes, discuss humane and ecological options for addressing venomous snake appearances in the home landscape, and offer identification tips and natural history information for workshop participants.
